Pregnancy

by Kaitlyn Wells

Months

hooked their pinkies in my belly button

and stretched and stretched,

while Past shoved Future inside,

Moving my guts, enabling pee.

Months giggled and left the room,

while Past stood a moment, looming over Future.

Quietly she rose, Past, turning off the light with a quick shh.

I slept.

Life was there suddenly, cowering curiously over Future and I.

Future wouldn't allow sleep.

He kicked, enraged, I screamed-

My legs thrust open, a tsunami heading straight for Life.

I screamed for Life.

A casualty as I closed my eyes and pushed Future as far as possible away.

But when I woke, there Life stood,

holding Future with a smile.

Future wailed as Life placed him gently in my arms.

Here we are, Future, my darling,

just me, you, and Life.

Hush while we figure this out.
