Insomnia Speaks
by Lexi Valentin
She whispers,
Find the clues
Discover why you can’t snooze
Was it Professor Plum,
Mrs. Peacock
Dr. Black
I walk to the fridge for a midnight snack
Heart racing,
It feels like it’s pounding out of my chest
Insomnia speaks
She doesn’t let me catch my breath

Nights turn to Days
Days to Weeks
I jolt awake
When the floorboards creak
Dreams are a luxury
I never get to keep
Kruger is a friend
To Insomnia speaks
Blame it on the depression,
Anxiety,
PTSD
Forgotten traumas resurface
They scream
You’re worthless
Undeserving
Who would want you?
In the kitchen
The study
The billiard room?
Guess again,
The month is February
What happened to you?
Fight through it or fly away
Take a class
Take a drug
Repress the demons who wait
My bed is like a dark alley
That I walk down at night
Keys between my fingers
Not a savior in sight
Sleep is a plague
A black death to avoid
Insomnia speaks
You’re paranoid
Was it the wrench
The candlestick
The knife
Was it just a dream
Or was that real life?
